Diabetes Digital Coach

Diabetes Digital Coach is an NHS IoT test bed project.

Diabetes Digital Coach is an NHS IoT test bed project, a unique collaboration between ten technology and evaluation partners led by the West of England Academic Health Science Network (AHSN).

The findings of this test bed will have a significant impact on the future of digital health and citizen-centric healthcare.

Launching in January 2018, the platform will provide thousands of people with diabetes (both type one and two) across England the opportunity to be more in control of their own care. The online service will be available via PC, smartphone and tablet.

The Coach offers access to up to five different digital self-management tools, based on information provided by users on their health, lifestyle and how they currently manage their diabetes.

These five tools have been carefully selected by people with diabetes and healthcare professionals to provide support for:

  • Health and wellbeing
  • Structured education
  • Dietitian support
  • Optimising physical activity
  • Insulin and glucose management.

Diabetes Digital Coach is a truly citizen-centric approach – the person with diabetes is completely in the driving seat. Users choose whether or not to share data from the Coach and with whom – healthcare professionals, carers, family, friends or any other support network.

People sharing their information with healthcare professionals should find this leads to more constructive conversations and shared decision making. Healthcare professionals should also find it easier to prioritise patients who need their help most.

The Diabetes Digital Coach will be greater than the sum of its parts. Users should see the combined benefits of using a number of different interventions, helping with different aspects of their condition and health in general.

Is this likely to be a free service to those with T1 and T2 or a premium service proving additional funding to support NHS care?

A free service as with other NHS services – in particular, those with diabetes who don’t have to pay for prescriptions.
